St. Petersburg, the second largest city in Russia, held a series of events on Tuesday, including a military parade and concerts, to commemorate the
78th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Victory Day is a celebration of the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, in which the Soviet Union lost around 27 million people.
Hal Turner Radio Show – Putin, Victory Day Speech: “War Unleashed Upon Russia – World at Turning Point”
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday at Moscow’s Red Square Victory Day parade that the world was at a “turning point” and stated factually a “war” had been unleashed against Russia.
He vowed victory and said Russia’s future “rests on” its soldiers fighting in Ukraine.
The traditional Soviet-style event celebrating Moscow’s victory over the Nazis took place amid security fears, 15 months into Russia’s Ukraine offensive. “Today civilization is again at a decisive turning point,” Putin said at the parade, which included elderly veterans and soldiers from Russia’s Ukraine campaign. “A war has been unleashed against our motherland,” he claimed. He
called for Russia to be victorious: “For Russia, for our armed forces, for victory!”

President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russians were united in a “sacred” fight with the West over Ukraine but the strains of war were evident at one of the most pared back anniversaries of the victory over Nazi Germany in decades.
Putin has repeatedly likened the war in Ukraine – which
he casts as a defensive move against a West which wants to carve up Russia – to the challenge Moscow faced when Adolf Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in 1941.
“The decisive battles for the fate of our Motherland have always become patriotic, all-national and sacred,” the 70-year-old president told veterans and soldiers assembled on Red Square for the
annual Victory Day parade.
“A real war has again been unleashed against our homeland,” he said.
Putin hailed Russian forces in Ukraine as heroes who were fighting for the country’s future against a West which,
he said, had forgotten the decisive role played by the Soviet Union in defeating Nazi Germany.
“The whole country rallied to support our heroes. Everyone is ready to help, praying for you,” he said of those taking part in what the Kremlin calls a “special military operation”.
Putin cheered for “Russia, for our valiant Armed Forces, for victory!”
Cheers rang out across Red Square, with a gun salute and the Russian national anthem, though with a much curtailed show of military hardware – and no aviation. A single tank took part – a T-34, a
type used in World War Two.
The Soviet Union lost 27 million people in World War Two, including many millions in Ukraine, but eventually pushed Nazi forces back to Berlin, where Hitler committed suicide and the red Soviet Victory Banner was raised over the Reichstag in 1945.
Kyiv and its allies deny Putin’s claim that the expansion of the NATO alliance to Russia’s borders poses a threat to its security or justifies Moscow’s invasion.
As many as 354,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured in the Ukraine war, which is now in its 15th month and could
well grind on well beyond 2023, according to a trove of purported U.S. intelligence documents posted online.

Russia fired cruise missiles at Kyiv on Tuesday and paraded troops and vintage equipment across Red Square in a curtailed celebration of victory in World War Two, while Kyiv fended off the air strikes and hosted the head of the European Union.
In a fiery 10-minute speech in front of the Kremlin walls, Russian President Vladimir Putin thundered against “Western global elites” and said Russia again faced an existential threat.
“Today, civilisation is again at a decisive turning point. A real war has been unleashed against our homeland,” said the Russian
leader, who last year ordered what the West calls an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, destroying cities and killing thousands of civilians.
In Ukraine there were no reported casualties from Russia’s latest wave of air strikes on the capital.
“Overnight into the ‘sacred’ May 9, (they) launched an attack on the territory of Ukraine,” Ukraine’s air force said.
Sergei Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, said the Russians were trying to kill civilians. “As at the front, the plans of the aggressor failed.”
Moscow denies targeting civilians and says its air strikes are aimed at reducing Ukraine’s ability to fight.
EU country arrests 26 people for celebrating Victory Day (rt.com)
More than two dozen residents of Latvia were arrested on Tuesday for violating the law against celebrating the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany. The EU and NATO member police even seized a “Russia” jacket from a man in a wheelchair, and arrested another for wearing Soviet
medals in public.
By 11:30 pm local time, Latvian police reported a total of 26 arrests, 38 misdemeanor citations and four criminal cases, according to the news outlet Delfi.
While most of the cases were
recorded in Riga, the capital, multiple arrests also took place in Daugavpils. In one incident, a senior citizen described as “looking too young to be a veteran of WWII” showed up wearing a jacket with Soviet medals. When police told him to take it off, he resisted arrest.
Five people were arrested for laying flowers with “symbols of military aggression” at the Freedom Monument in the Daugavpils Victory Park. They were charged with “public use of symbols glorifying militaristic aggression and war
crimes.” In the same park, police forced a man in a wheelchair to remove his jacket because it said “Russia.”
Two Russian-speaking men were detained at the Dubrovinsky Park in Daugavpils after giving an interview to TV3. Their
sin was expressing the opinion that the fascists had returned to power in Ukraine, with EU support.
